In Jewish tradition
In the Torah the "lad" is a young person, such as Ishmael in the desert, and God's care for him is stressed. In Samuel, the "lad" is the young servant who fetches Jonathan's arrows and knows nothing of the secret signal between Jonathan and David.
Interpretation. The commentators note that God heard the cry of the lad where he was, which they use to teach that God judges each person as they are now. The lad in Samuel is read as an innocent helper who did not know the danger David was in.
