In the lessons

In science lessons on the human body, kidneys are part of the excretory system: they filter blood and make wee (urine), which goes to the bladder. Drinking enough water helps the kidneys work. Kidney beans are named after their shape. People can live with one kidney, and kidney transplants can save lives. Phrases: kidney beans, kidney stones, steak and kidney pie.

Note

In Jewish tradition

In the Torah this is an animal's kidney, which is part of the inner fat and organs burned on the altar in offerings.

Interpretation. The kidneys with the fat were God's portion of the offering, and tradition also treats the kidneys as the seat of inner thoughts and conscience.

  • and the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, which is by the loins, and the lobe above the liver, which he shall take away by the kidneys. (Torah LEV.3.10, JPS 1917) tree →
