In Jewish tradition
Jacob is one of the three forefathers, and the name Israel, given after he wrestled, became the name of the whole people. The prophets and psalms often use "Jacob" or "the house of Jacob" for the whole nation of Israel, and sometimes for its northern kingdom.
Interpretation. Tradition reads "Jacob" as the heel-grasper and "Israel" as one who struggles with God, and sees him as the father of the twelve tribes. When the prophets say "Jacob" they are read as speaking to the whole people, calling them to answer for their deeds.
