In Jewish tradition
In the Torah it means the share of land that belongs to a family or tribe for ever, or Israel's lasting gift from God. The prophets and psalms also call the people themselves God's inheritance, and Lamentations mourns that the inheritance has passed to strangers.
Interpretation. Tradition says land was divided by lot among tribes, and laws such as the daughters of Zelophehad's case keep it in the family. It reads Israel as God's own portion, and exile as the loss of the land.
