individually

adverb (individually)

«individually» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. One at a time, separately, not as a group. tree →
  2. In a way that fits each single person or thing: each cake was individually decorated. tree →

In the lessons

In school: «work individually, then share with a partner»; «the teacher spoke to us individually». In shops and maths: items «individually wrapped» or «sold individually» (one by one, not in a pack). It tells the reader each one is treated alone.

Examples

  • The teacher marked each test individually. tree →
  • First work individually, then compare answers with your partner. tree →
  • The chocolates are individually wrapped. tree →
  • The coach spoke to each player individually after the match. tree →
  • The pens cost 50p individually or £2 for a pack of five. tree →
  • Each costume was individually made by hand. tree →
  • Individually, the ants are tiny, but together they are strong. tree →

Note

Adjective: individual; noun: an individual (one person). In maths, «sold individually» means price per single item; compare it with the pack price to find the better deal (e.g. 5 × 50p = £2.50, so the £2 pack saves 50p). Spelling: double l.

In Jewish tradition

Interpretation: Sefer Yetzirah's idea is that God made all things in relation to one another and not as separate objects. In the primary lessons: In school: «work individually, then share with a partner»; «the teacher spoke to us individually». In shops and maths: items «individually wrapped» or «sold individually» (one by one, not in a pack). It tells the reader each one is treated alone.

Examples

  • The meaning for the SY is: God did not make things by themselves, individually, but rather, He made all things in relationship to all other things. (Sefer Yetzirah, Sefaria community translation) tree →

Note

Adjective: individual; noun: an individual (one person). In maths, «sold individually» means price per single item; compare it with the pack price to find the better deal (e.g. 5 × 50p = £2.50, so the £2 pack saves 50p). Spelling: double l.
