In Jewish tradition
It is used for gems set in gold on the High Priest's breastplate, and also for enemies who surround someone, as in the psalmist's cry that evildoers have inclosed him and in the soldiers who surrounded the Benjamites. In Ezekiel it describes small walled courts in the corners of the Temple court.
Interpretation. The High Priest's breastplate had twelve stones, one for each tribe, and he wore them over his heart when he served. Tradition reads the psalm as the cry of a person surrounded by enemies who turns to God for help.
