idiotic

adjective (idiotic, more idiotic, most idiotic)

«idiotic» in the English dictionary: everyday — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

Very stupid or silly; making no sense. tree →

In the lessons

An informal, quite rude word for an idea, act or remark, not a polite way to describe a person. In stories characters call each other's plans idiotic when they argue, and Toad's schemes are often called idiotic by his friends.

Examples

  • That was an idiotic thing to do! tree →
  • Jumping off the shed was an idiotic idea. tree →
  • Rat thought Toad's plan to drive again was idiotic. tree →
  • Stop asking idiotic questions and listen. tree →
  • The Mad Hatter gave idiotic answers to every question. tree →
  • It's idiotic to leave the gate open with the dog in the garden. tree →

Note

Adjective from «idiot». Adverb: idiotically. It can hurt feelings, so describe the action, not the person («that was a silly idea», not «you are an idiot»). The old use of «idiot» for people with learning difficulties is now offensive.
