hyperactivity

noun (hyperactivity, uncountable)

«hyperactivity» in the English dictionary: everyday — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

In the lessons

In health and everyday life, everyone can be very active sometimes, but hyperactivity is when it happens a lot and makes school or home harder. ADHD is a real condition, not bad behaviour; children with it can get help and often have great strengths. In science, «hyperactivity» can also describe an organ or gland working too much. Myth: sugar causes hyperactivity — studies have mostly not found this.

Examples

  • ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. tree →
  • His hyperactivity made it hard to sit through long lessons. tree →
  • The teacher gave her movement breaks to help with hyperactivity. tree →
  • Many people believe sugar causes hyperactivity, but studies show little effect. tree →

Note

Uncountable. «Hyper-» means over or too much. The adjective is «hyperactive». Trap: «hyper» in everyday slang («I'm so hyper!») just means very excited, not a medical condition.
