hittite

noun

«hittite» in the English dictionary: in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

In Jewish tradition

One of the nations living in Canaan, whose land was promised to Abraham's children; Esau's Hittite wives caused his parents grief. Later, Uriah the Hittite is a loyal soldier of David, whose wife Bath-sheba David took.

Interpretation. Rashi says Esau's wives practiced idolatry and made life bitter for Isaac and Rebekah. Uriah is remembered as a faithful man, and David's wrong to him is something the rabbis discuss with care.
