In the lessons
In science hearing is one of the five senses (with sight, smell, taste and touch); sound waves make the eardrum vibrate and the brain understands them. In health and safety lessons we protect our hearing from very loud noise, and some people are deaf or hard of hearing and may use hearing aids or sign language. Animals like dogs and bats have better hearing than people. Phrases: hard of hearing, hearing aid, within hearing, hearing test.

Note
«Hear» is irregular: hear, heard, heard. «Hearing» (noticing sounds) is different from «listening» (paying attention on purpose). Do not confuse «hear» with «here» (a place); they sound the same. Covering your ears or wearing ear defenders near very loud sounds protects your hearing.
In Jewish tradition
In the Torah, "in the hearing of" means in front of people so that they can all hear, as when the law is read aloud. In the Prophets and Writings it also means the ear or sense of hearing, as in "the hearing ear," and being called "in my hearing."
Interpretation. Hearing the Torah read aloud was a duty. Every seventh year the king or leader reads it in the people's hearing at the festival of Sukkot. Proverbs says that God made both the hearing ear and the seeing eye, so tradition sees hearing as a gift from God.
