harlotry

noun

«harlotry» in the English dictionary: in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

In Jewish tradition

In the Torah it means sexual sin and, along with it, turning away to other gods. Israel does it with Moabite women at Shittim. The prophets use it as a figure for Israel's idol worship: Ezekiel speaks of Jerusalem's harlotries, and Hosea says harlotry and wine take away the heart.

Interpretation. Tradition reads the sin at Peor as both immorality and idol worship, and it warns that harlotry can fill the whole land with lewdness. The prophets are read as teaching that worshipping other gods is unfaithfulness to God, like a wife betraying her husband.

Meaning
