In Jewish tradition

"Eye for eye, hand for hand" is read as a rule of fair payment. In the Prophets and Writings the hand is also used for giving and receiving, putting a hand on the mouth for silence, and laying hands on someone as a sign of strength or blessing.

Interpretation. The sages read "eye for eye" as money compensation, not cutting off a hand. God's hand stands for His power and saving acts. Job's hand on his mouth is read as humble silence before God.
