«golf» in the English dictionary: everyday — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. Golf is a game in which players hit a small hard ball with clubs into a series of holes, using as few hits as possible. tree →
  2. Mini golf (crazy golf) is a small, fun version with obstacles. tree →

In the lessons

In everyday life people play golf on a golf course with 9 or 18 holes; families play mini golf on holidays. In maths, golf scores show «fewest is best»: par is the expected number of strokes, so «2 under par» means 2 fewer hits than expected. Phrases: «play golf», «golf course», «golf club», «golf ball», «hole in one», «mini golf», «crazy golf».

Examples

  • Grandpa plays golf every Saturday. tree →
  • We played crazy golf at the seaside. tree →
  • She got a hole in one! tree →
  • A golf course usually has eighteen holes. tree →
  • He hit the golf ball into the pond. tree →
  • In golf, the lowest score wins. tree →
  • Shout «Fore!» if your ball might hit someone. tree →
  • The golf club is in the bag. tree →

Note

Uncountable: «play golf», not «a golf». A «golf club» is both the stick and the place/organisation. Maths: in golf, unlike most games, the smallest number wins; a score under par is good. Safety: never stand near someone swinging a club.
