Mostly informal or an abbreviation, not a full word in careful writing; in essays write «generation», «genuinely», «General» or «Genesis». «Gen» is said with a soft «j» sound, like «jen». Do not confuse it with «gene» (part of DNA) or «gem» (a jewel).
