frostbite
noun (frostbite)
Everyday
Frostbite is an injury to the skin and the body under it caused by very cold weather, usually on the fingers, toes, nose and ears. tree →
In the lessons
In safety and outdoor lessons pupils learn that frostbite happens when skin freezes; first the skin goes red and tingly, then white or grey and numb. To prevent it, wear hats, gloves, scarves and warm socks, keep dry and come indoors. If someone may have frostbite, get an adult, warm the area slowly with body heat or warm (not hot) water, and do not rub it. Important in Canada, the northern USA and on mountains.
