freshly

adverb (freshly)

«freshly» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

Very recently; only just: «freshly baked bread», «freshly cut grass». tree →

In the lessons

Used almost always before a past participle to tell the reader something was done a moment ago, so it is new, clean or at its best: freshly made, freshly washed, freshly painted, freshly squeezed. In safety: «freshly painted» means wet paint — don't touch.

Examples

  • The kitchen smelled of freshly baked bread. tree →
  • I love the smell of freshly cut grass. tree →
  • She drank a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. tree →
  • Careful, the bench is freshly painted! tree →
  • My freshly washed socks are on the line. tree →
  • We had freshly picked strawberries from the farm. tree →
  • He had not gone many paces into the shrubbery when before him lay a freshly wounded deer! tree →

Note

Adverb from «fresh» + «-ly». Usually comes right before a past participle (baked, cut, made). Do not use «freshly» for people feeling fresh: say «I feel fresh», not «I feel freshly».

In Jewish tradition

Interpretation: Tradition reads the fresh olive leaf as a sign that the world was alive again after the Flood; some say its bitterness hinted that food from God is better than gifts from people. In the primary lessons: Used almost always before a past participle to tell the reader something was done a moment ago, so it is new, clean or at its best: freshly made, freshly washed, freshly painted, freshly squeezed. In safety: «freshly painted» means wet paint — don't touch.

Examples

  • And the dove came in to him at eventide; and lo in her mouth an olive-leaf freshly plucked; so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth. (Torah GEN.8.11, JPS 1917) tree →

Note

Adverb from «fresh» + «-ly». Usually comes right before a past participle (baked, cut, made). Do not use «freshly» for people feeling fresh: say «I feel fresh», not «I feel freshly».
