forearm

noun (a forearm, forearms); verb (forearm, forearms, forearmed — rare)

«forearm» in the English dictionary: everyday — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. The forearm is the part of the arm between the elbow and the wrist. tree →
  2. (rare) To forearm is to prepare or arm yourself before something happens; it appears in the saying «Forewarned is forearmed», meaning if you know about a danger beforehand, you can be ready for it. tree →

In the lessons

In science lessons, the forearm has two bones, the radius and the ulna, and muscles that move the hand. In PE and sport, players use their forearms in volleyball and in blocking. In maths, children measure the length of their forearm (from elbow to fingertips is an old measure called a cubit). Phrases: «forewarned is forearmed», «forearm pass».

Examples

  • He broke his forearm falling off his bike. tree →
  • The forearm has two bones: the radius and the ulna. tree →
  • Hit the volleyball with your forearms. tree →
  • She had a tattoo on her forearm. tree →
  • Measure your forearm with a tape measure. tree →
  • Forewarned is forearmed, so check the weather before the hike. tree →

Note

Countable; one word. Stress: FORE-arm for the noun, fore-ARM for the verb. A cubit (from elbow to fingertip) was about 45 cm in the old days, so it differs a little from the forearm alone.
