In Jewish tradition

Here it means shaped or carved with a tool. Aaron shapes the gold into the calf. In the Prophets and Writings it also means made or formed, whether an idol by a craftsman or a person by God's hands.

Interpretation. Commentators argue about Aaron's part in the golden calf. Some say he was forced into it and tried to delay the people, and the story is read as a warning about idolatry. Isaiah mocks idols made by hand, while the psalmist prays to the God who fashioned him to teach him.

Examples

  • And he received it at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, and made it a molten calf; and they said: 'This is thy god, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.' (Torah EXO.32.4, JPS 1917) tree →
