farther

adverb, adjective (far, farther, farthest)

«farther» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. Farther means more far, a longer way away. tree →
  2. Farther can also mean more forward or onward: walk farther. tree →

In the lessons

maths: comparisons of distance; «how much farther» asks for a difference (subtract); «n farther» adds n; PE: who threw or jumped farther; everyday life: farther down the road

Examples

  • Tom ran 5 km and Ben ran 2 km farther. tree →
  • How much farther is the park than the shop? tree →
  • Who threw the ball farther? tree →
  • She lives 3 miles farther away. tree →
  • The beach is farther than the lake. tree →
  • We can't walk any farther. tree →
  • Her paper plane flew farther than mine. tree →
  • "Is it much farther?" asked Proserpina. tree →

Note

Compare distances: «n farther» adds n; «how much farther» subtracts. Trap: read who is farther before subtracting. «Further» is also fine for distance, and also means more or extra (further help).

In Jewish tradition

Here it is a slip for "further" (the text says "Miller farther says"), meaning "also" or "in addition"; it is not about distance. In the primary lessons: maths: comparisons of distance; «how much farther» asks for a difference (subtract); «n farther» adds n; PE: who threw or jumped farther; everyday life: farther down the road

Examples

  • Miller farther says: "The discovery of zero, as used above, implies its use in positional arithmetic. (Mordell, The Origin of Letters and Numerals according to Sefer Yetzirah (1914)) tree →

Note

Compare distances: «n farther» adds n; «how much farther» subtracts. Trap: read who is farther before subtracting. «Further» is also fine for distance, and also means more or extra (further help).
