enough

adjective, adverb, pronoun (enough)

«enough» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. Enough means as much as you need or want. If you have enough money, you can buy it. tree →
  2. Enough after a word means to the needed amount: big enough, fast enough. tree →
  3. «That's enough!» means stop now. tree →

In the lessons

maths: asks whether an amount covers what is needed; compare what you have with what you need (have ≥ need?); «how many more to have enough» = need − have; everyday life: enough food, enough sleep; science: plants need enough light and water; phrases: «more than enough», «not enough», «enough is enough»

Examples

  • Does she have enough money to buy the toy? tree →
  • Are there enough chairs for 30 people? tree →
  • How many more does he need to have enough? tree →
  • He has enough paint for 2 walls. tree →
  • Is the water warm enough to swim? tree →
  • Children need enough sleep. tree →
  • That's enough sweets for today. tree →
  • We have more than enough paper. tree →
  • "Goodby," he said, "I've seen enough. tree →

Note

Compare: have ≥ need? «How many more to have enough» means need − have. Trap: «enough for 2 walls» is a rate, not the answer. Say «ee-NUFF»; the «ough» sounds like «uff». «Old enough», not «enough old».
