enlargement

noun (enlargement, enlargements)

«enlargement» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. The act of making something bigger. tree →
  2. A photo that has been printed or made bigger. tree →
  3. (maths) A transformation that makes a shape bigger or smaller by a scale factor, keeping its shape the same. tree →
  4. (medicine) A part of the body that has become larger than normal: «enlargement of the heart». tree →

In the lessons

In maths: enlargement by a scale factor — every length is multiplied by the same number (scale factor 2 doubles each side; area becomes 4 times bigger). In art and photography: enlargements of photos. In everyday life: enlargement of a building or a school. Phrases: «scale factor of enlargement», «centre of enlargement», «an enlargement of».

Examples

  • Draw an enlargement of the triangle with scale factor 3. tree →

Note

Countable. Verb: «enlarge». Maths: with scale factor k, lengths are multiplied by k, area by k × k, and angles do not change. A scale factor between 0 and 1 makes the shape smaller (still called an enlargement in maths).

In Jewish tradition

It means being brought into a wide, roomy place, which is a picture of relief and rescue. It is the opposite of being in straits.

Interpretation. This verse is read as an image of rescue, with God taking a person out of a tight place into freedom. It is part of the Hallel psalms said on festivals.

Examples

  • Out of my straits I called upon the LORD; He answered me with great enlargement. (Writings PSA.118.5, JPS 1917) tree →

Note

Countable. Verb: «enlarge». Maths: with scale factor k, lengths are multiplied by k, area by k × k, and angles do not change. A scale factor between 0 and 1 makes the shape smaller (still called an enlargement in maths).
