endlessly
adverb
Everyday
- Without ever stopping or ending; for what seems forever. tree →
- Very much, without limit, as in «endlessly patient». tree →
In the lessons
Often used in stories with a slight exaggeration: «talked endlessly», «the road stretched endlessly». In maths, numbers go on endlessly (there is no biggest number), and some decimals like 1/3 = 0.333… go on endlessly.
Examples
- My little sister talks endlessly about dinosaurs. tree →
- The desert stretched endlessly in every direction. tree →
- Toad boasted endlessly about his motor-car. tree →
- The numbers go on endlessly; you can always add one more. tree →
- One third written as a decimal is 0.333..., with threes going on endlessly. tree →
- Our teacher is endlessly patient with us. tree →
- The rain fell endlessly all weekend. tree →
- The Elephant's Child asked questions endlessly. tree →
Note
Adverb from «endless» (without end). Often an exaggeration in everyday talk: it just means «for a very long time». In maths, «endlessly» or «infinitely» is literally true for number lines and repeating decimals.
