end

noun (end, ends); verb (end, ends, ended, ending)

«end» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. The end is the last part of something, like the end of a story or a day. tree →
  2. An end is the far part or tip of something long, like the end of a rope or a road. tree →
  3. To end means to stop or to finish. tree →
  4. An end can also mean an aim, what you want to get. tree →

In the lessons

maths: the last moment or place; the amount «at the end» is the result after all changes; ends of a row (trees from one end to the other); end time of an event (length = end − start); stories: «the end», a happy ending; everyday life: the end of term, the deep end of the pool; phrases: «in the end», «end up», «make ends meet», «at the end of»

Examples

  • At the end of the day, he had 5 dollars. tree →
  • The movie ends at 8 o'clock. tree →
  • How many are left at the end? tree →
  • She ran to the end of the road. tree →

Note

Points to the final amount after all the changes. Trap: «trees from one end to the other» of a row often counts both ends (one more than the gaps). «End up» means finally be somewhere or have something.

In Jewish tradition

It often marks a time period, such as the seven-year cycle, where the end of the year brings a release of debts. "Latter end" means what will come in the future.

Interpretation. Tradition reads the seventh-year release (shemitah) as a chance to forgive debts and start again. The "latter end" is read as the final outcome of Israel's actions.

Examples

  • At the end of every seven years thou shalt make a release. (Torah DEU.15.1, JPS 1917) tree →
  • And they returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days. (Torah NUM.13.25, JPS 1917) tree →
  • If they were wise, they would understand this, they would discern their latter end. (Torah DEU.32.29, JPS 1917) tree →
