In Jewish tradition

In the Torah, the blood of an offering is drained out at the side or base of the altar. In Job and Isaiah it means to dry up, as when a river is "drained dry."

Interpretation. Blood stands for life and belongs to God, so it is handled with care on the altar and is not eaten. The drying river is a picture of the loss of strength and plenty.
