Meaning
- Done means finished or completed: my homework is done.
- Done is the form of «do» used after have, has or had: I have done it.
- Food that is done is cooked enough.
- «Done!» means «I agree» or «it is a deal».
In the lessons
In maths: the part of a job already finished; what is left = the whole − the part done; «done 3 of 5» gives the done part. In school: when you are done, check your work. In cooking: the cake is done when a skewer comes out clean. Phrases: well done, all done, get it done, done with, have done, half done.
Examples
- She has done 15 of her 20 problems.
- When will the work be done?
- He has done 3 laps; 5 are left.
- How many are still to be done?
- Well done! You got every answer right.
- I have done my chores.
- Is the pasta done yet?
- When you are done, put your book away.
Note
Use «done» after have, has or had: «I have done it», not «I have did it». «Did» is the simple past: I did it. Left = total − done. Trap: «done 3 of 5» gives the done part, not what is left.
