distinct

adjective (distinct, more distinct, most distinct)

«distinct» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. Clearly different or separate from something else: two distinct groups. tree →
  2. Easy to see, hear, smell or notice; clear: a distinct smell of smoke. tree →
  3. Definite; real: a distinct chance of rain. tree →

In the lessons

In maths «distinct» means different from each other — «three distinct numbers» means no two are the same; in science animals are sorted into distinct groups; in everyday life you notice a distinct sound or smell. Phrases: «distinct from», «a distinct possibility», «quite distinct».

Examples

  • Choose three distinct numbers that add up to 10. tree →
  • A frog and a toad are distinct animals. tree →
  • There was a distinct smell of burning toast. tree →
  • Her voice was clear and distinct. tree →
  • There is a distinct chance of snow tonight. tree →
  • The two words sound alike but have distinct meanings. tree →

Note

Do not confuse with «distinctive» (special, easy to recognise as belonging to one thing: a distinctive voice) or «extinct» (no longer living). In maths, «distinct» means no repeats: the distinct numbers in 2, 2, 5 are 2 and 5, so there are 2 of them.
