In the lessons
In science, when a solid (the solute) dissolves in a liquid (the solvent), it makes a solution. Salt and sugar dissolve in water; sand and chalk do not. The dissolved substance is still there: the water tastes salty, and you can get the salt back by evaporating the water. Stirring and warm water make things dissolve faster. In stories, "dissolved into giggles" shows someone could not stop laughing. Phrases: "dissolved in water", "completely dissolved", "dissolved into tears", "dissolved oxygen" (in water, for fish).
Examples
- The sugar dissolved in my hot chocolate. tree →
- We stirred until all the salt had dissolved. tree →
- Sand has not dissolved; it is still at the bottom. tree →
- The tablet dissolved in the glass of water. tree →
- Fish breathe oxygen dissolved in the water. tree →

Note
Spelling: double s, dissolved. Trap: dissolving is not the same as melting. Melting is one thing turning from solid to liquid by heat (ice to water); dissolving is a solid mixing into a liquid (sugar in water). A dissolved substance does not disappear, so its mass is still there: 100 g of water + 10 g of salt makes 110 g of salt water.
In Jewish tradition
It means melted, broken down or made to fall apart. It describes things like walls, palaces or the earth losing their strength.
Interpretation. Nahum describes Nineveh's palace collapsing. In the Psalm, God says that even when the earth shakes, He holds up its pillars, which the tradition reads as God keeping the world steady.
Examples
- The gates of the rivers are opened, and the palace is dissolved. (Prophets NAM.2.7, JPS 1917) tree →
- When the earth and all the inhabitants thereof are dissolved, I Myself establish the pillars of it.' Selah (Writings PSA.75.4, JPS 1917) tree →
