In Jewish tradition
It means to hide one's wrongdoing by pretending, or to deal falsely. Achan stole and then hid the stolen goods.
Interpretation. Joshua's story of Achan shows that hidden sin affects the whole community. The tradition sees the lesson that secret wrongs cannot be hidden from God.
Examples
- Israel hath sinned; yea, they have even transgressed My covenant which I commanded them; yea, they have even taken of the devoted thing; and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have even put it among their own stuff. (Prophets JOS.7.11, JPS 1917) tree →
