In Jewish tradition

In the Torah, it means unhappy, upset, or angry, as when Moses was upset at the people's weeping and Joseph at Jacob's right hand placed on Ephraim. In the Prophets it is also said of God, who is displeased with Israel's fathers and with David's wrong deed, and of Jonah, who was angry when God spared Nineveh.

Interpretation. Jacob's crossed hands are read as a sign that Ephraim would be the greater tribe. Jacob replied that he knew what he was doing. God's displeasure in the Prophets is read as a call to return and do better, and not as a wish to destroy.
