digraph
noun (a digraph, digraphs)
Everyday
Two letters that together make one sound, such as sh in «ship», ch in «chip», th in «thin», ee in «see» and ai in «rain». tree →
In the lessons
In phonics lessons children learn digraphs to read and spell: consonant digraphs (sh, ch, th, ph, wh, ck) and vowel digraphs (ee, oa, ai, oo). A trigraph is three letters making one sound (igh in «night»). «Split digraph» is a-e as in «cake». Phrases: «consonant digraph», «vowel digraph», «split digraph».
Examples
- «Sh» is a digraph in the word «fish». tree →
- Find the digraph in «boat». It's «oa». tree →
- «Ph» in «phone» is a digraph that sounds like f. tree →
- The split digraph i-e makes «bike» say its name. tree →
- Underline every digraph in the sentence. tree →
- «Th» can sound different in «this» and «thin». tree →
Note
Countable. Di- means two, -graph means writing. Not to be confused with «diagram» or «graph» in maths. A digraph is ONE sound, so «sh» is not s + h.
