die

noun (die, dice); verb (die, dies, died, dying)

«die» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

  2. A die is one small cube with dots from 1 to 6, used in games. A die has 6 faces. tree →
  3. To be dying to do something means to want it very much. tree →
  4. To die down is to become weaker, like a fire or wind. tree →

In the lessons

maths: a cube with numbers 1 to 6 for rolls and chances; as a verb, plants or animals that die are taken away (subtract); science: life cycles, all living things die; plants die without water; stories: sad parts when a pet dies; phrases: «die down», «dying to»

Examples

Note

As a cube it fixes the numbers 1 to 6; as «died» it means subtract. Trap: the plural of the game piece is «dice». «Dying» (stopping living) is not «dyeing» (colouring cloth).

In Jewish tradition

In the Torah, death comes as the end of each life, or as punishment, and is often followed by being "gathered to one's people".

Interpretation. Tradition says death came into the world after Adam's sin, and that the righteous are remembered for blessing.
