In Jewish tradition

Means "cherem": something set apart for God that can't be bought back, and may go to the priests; a devoted person is put to death. In the Prophets and Writings a "devoted thing" is spoil of war that was meant to be given up wholly to God, as in the sin of Achar and Saul's people at Gilgal.

Interpretation. Tradition understands "cherem" as a total dedication to the sanctuary, and the rabbis limit the death penalty so that it does not apply easily. Achar's taking of the devoted thing is read as a warning that keeping what is set apart for God brings trouble on all Israel.
