destination

noun (a destination, destinations)

«destination» in the English dictionary: everyday — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. A destination is the place someone or something is going to or being sent to. tree →
  2. A destination is a place that many people like to visit, such as a holiday town. tree →
  3. A destination can be the end or aim of something, like the goal you want to reach. tree →

In the lessons

In everyday life the destination is shown on the front of a bus, on a ticket or in a map app. In geography it is the end of a journey; in maths journey problems the distance «to the destination» is what you add up or divide by the speed. In stories reaching the destination is the end of the adventure. Phrases: reach your destination, final destination, holiday destination, travel destination, arrive at the destination.

Examples

  • The sign on the front of the bus shows its destination. tree →
  • We reached our destination after six hours in the car. tree →
  • Cornwall is a popular holiday destination. tree →
  • The parcel's destination is written on the label. tree →
  • The train is 40 km from its destination, travelling at 80 km an hour. tree →

Note

Countable noun. The verb that goes with it is often «reach» or «arrive at» (not «arrive to»). «Destiny» is a different word: what will happen to you in the future. In maths, «distance to the destination» usually equals total distance minus the distance already travelled.
