In Jewish tradition

Moses' mother daubed his basket of bulrushes with slime and pitch so that it would float. Ezekiel uses it for false prophets who daub a weak wall with whitewash to hide its faults.

Interpretation. The tradition reads Moses' mother's act as a mother's care, which saved the future leader. The word for the basket, teva, is the same as Noah's ark. Ezekiel's daubing is read as a picture of false comfort, saying "peace" when there is none.

Examples

  • And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch; and she put the child therein, and laid it in the flags by the river's brink. (Torah EXO.2.3, JPS 1917) tree →
  • and, lo, when the wall is fallen, shall it not be said unto you: Where is the daubing wherewith ye have daubed it? (Prophets EZK.13.12, JPS 1917) tree →
  • And her prophets have daubed for them with whited plaster, seeing falsehood, and divining lies unto them, saying: Thus saith the Lord GOD, when the LORD hath not spoken. (Prophets EZK.22.28, JPS 1917) tree →
  • Because, even because they have led My people astray, saying: Peace, and there is no peace; and when it buildeth up a slight wall, behold, they daub it with whited plaster; (Prophets EZK.13.10, JPS 1917) tree →
