noun (a condor, condors)

Everyday

A condor is a very large vulture with huge wings and a bald head, living in the Andes mountains (the Andean condor) or California (the California condor). tree →

In the lessons

In nature lessons the Andean condor is one of the largest flying birds, with wings over 3 metres across; it soars for hours on rising air without flapping. The California condor almost died out — fewer than 30 were left — and was saved by catching them all, breeding them and releasing their young. Condors are scavengers and eat dead animals. Phrases: «Andean condor», «California condor», «soar like a condor».

Examples

  • The condor soared over the mountains without flapping. tree →

Plural «condors». Say KON-dor. Condors are New World vultures. The Andean condor is a national symbol in several South American countries.
