In Jewish tradition

In the Torah, to conceive means to become pregnant, as the wives of Jacob did. The prophets also use it of Gomer's children in Hosea, and Job uses it as a figure: people "conceive mischief and bring forth iniquity."

Interpretation. Tradition sees the birth of the tribes of Israel from Jacob's wives as the start of the Jewish people. Several mothers could conceive only with God's help. The picture of conceiving mischief shows how a wicked plan grows like a pregnancy.
