clearly

adverb (clearly, more clearly, most clearly)

«clearly» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. Clearly means in a way that is easy to see, hear or understand: «Speak clearly». tree →
  2. Clearly means obviously, without doubt: «She was clearly upset». tree →

In the lessons

In school, write clearly, speak clearly, and set out maths working clearly so others can follow it. In emergencies, speak clearly on the phone and say where you are. In stories and reasoning, «clearly» signals something the writer thinks is obvious — but check it, as obvious things can be wrong. Phrases: «think clearly», «see clearly», «clearly marked».

Examples

  • Please speak clearly so we can hear you. tree →
  • Write your name clearly at the top. tree →
  • The path is clearly marked with signs. tree →
  • Clearly, it was going to rain. tree →

Note

From «clear» + «-ly». «Clearly» about seeing/hearing = in a clear way; at the start of a sentence = obviously. Do not write «clearely».

In Jewish tradition

In the Torah it means openly and plainly, as in a vow spoken out loud.

Interpretation. Tradition teaches that a vow must be spoken clearly and kept. Words said to God are binding.

Examples

  • And when thou preparest a bullock for a burnt-offering, or for a sacrifice, in fulfilment of a vow clearly uttered, or for peace-offerings unto the LORD; (Torah NUM.15.8, JPS 1917) tree →
  • Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When a man shall clearly utter a vow of persons unto the LORD, according to thy valuation, (Torah LEV.27.2, JPS 1917) tree →
  • Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When either man or woman shall clearly utter a vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to consecrate himself unto the LORD, (Torah NUM.6.2, JPS 1917) tree →

Note

From «clear» + «-ly». «Clearly» about seeing/hearing = in a clear way; at the start of a sentence = obviously. Do not write «clearely».
