bird

noun (bird, birds)

Everyday

In the lessons

a thing counted, often sitting on a fence or a tree; birds come (add) and fly away (take away); in science birds are a group of animals with feathers; phrases: «a flock of birds», «bird's nest», «early bird», «birds of a feather»

Examples

  • 4 more birds came to join them. tree →

Note

A thing counted. «came», «joined» add; «flew away» takes away. Trap: storks and birds may be counted separately in the question. Fact: every bird has feathers; bats fly but are not birds; penguins and ostriches are birds but do not fly.

In Jewish tradition

Birds are divided into clean ones that may be eaten and unclean ones that may not; birds were also used as offerings.

Interpretation. The rabbis hold that only birds with signs of tradition may be eaten, and birds were used in the purification of a person healed of tzaraat.

Examples

  • And the birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, and Abram drove them away. (Torah GEN.15.11, JPS 1917) tree →

Note

A thing counted. «came», «joined» add; «flew away» takes away. Trap: storks and birds may be counted separately in the question. Fact: every bird has feathers; bats fly but are not birds; penguins and ostriches are birds but do not fly.
