In Jewish tradition

Baal-berith ("lord of the covenant") and El-berith were names of a god worshiped at Shechem. Israel went astray after him.

Interpretation. The word berith usually names the covenant between God and Israel. Here the same word is used for a false god, which the tradition treats as a sad twisting of Israel's loyalty.
