In Jewish tradition

In the Tanakh it mostly means the side of a river, such as the Jordan, or a raised bed of plants. In the Song of Songs it is a bed of spices.

Interpretation. Elisha stands at the bank of the Jordan when he takes up Elijah's cloak, and tradition sees this as the moment the prophet's work passes to him. Gabriel's voice by the river Ulai shows that visions can come in any place.
