  1. The joint that connects your foot to your leg, letting the foot bend up and down and turn. tree →
  2. Ankle-deep means so deep that the water or mud only reaches up to your ankles. tree →

In the lessons

In science, the ankle is a joint where bones of the leg (tibia and fibula) meet a foot bone (the talus); ligaments hold them together. In sport and safety, twisting or spraining an ankle is a common injury when you land badly or step on uneven ground; good shoes and warming up help. First aid for a sprained ankle: rest, ice wrapped in a cloth, gentle support, and raise the foot (RICE). See a doctor if you cannot put weight on it. Phrases: "sprain/twist your ankle", "ankle socks", "ankle-deep", "ankle boots", "a broken ankle".

Note

Use "an": an ankle. Countable: two ankles. Do not confuse with "uncle". Spelling: -le at the end, like "candle". In maths, people have 2 ankles each: 6 people have 12 ankles.

In Jewish tradition

Here it means water that is only ankle-deep. It is the first stage of Ezekiel's vision of a river flowing from the Temple.

Interpretation. The river grows deeper with each measurement, and tradition reads it as a sign that blessing and healing will flow from God's house in the future.
