airport
noun (an airport, airports)
Everyday
A place where aeroplanes take off and land, with buildings (terminals) where passengers check in, go through security and wait for their flights. tree →
In the lessons
In everyday life and travel, at an airport you check in, drop your bags, go through security (bags are scanned, some liquids are not allowed), show your passport for international flights, and wait at the gate for boarding. In safety, stay with your adult; if lost, go to someone in uniform at a desk. In maths, airports have timetables with 24-hour times and flight durations: a flight leaving at 14:20 that takes 2 h 30 min lands at 16:50 (local time differences can change this). Phrases: "go to the airport", "airport security", "arrivals and departures", "at the airport", "pick someone up from the airport".
